Young Democrats put swimming plea to parents

THE YOUNG DEMOCRATS of Barbados (YDB) has sent out a plea to parents and guardians urging them to ensure their children learn to swim.

The call was made by president of the YDB, Tyra Trotman yesterday during a presentation to teenage visitors Zoe Ireland Meklensek and Emma Bassermann, who saved a couple from the UK last week.

At the Barbados Beach Club in Maxwell Coast Road, Christ Church, close to the site of the rescue, Trotman offered a token of appreciation to the two heroes whose quick actions ensured the safety of the elderly couple.

“I am making a public plea to all parents to enrol your children into a swimming programme. We live on an island which as we know by its definition is surrounded by water. Not only can the ability to swim save your child’s life but as in this instance, that child can become someone who can save the life of another. Although even the greatest swimmers can sometimes get into difficulties, your chances of survival are increased if you have the knowledge and skill to remain calm and tackle the situation without fear and panic,” she said.

Trotman, an attorney explained that she felt it important for the youth organisation to show appreciation for the actions of the 13 and 14-year-old Canadians.
